Essex Steam Train & Riverboat

This scenic journey begins in Essex, CT. You take a steam train (red line) through the villages of Deep River and Chester. The train track was initially built in 1871 from Old Saybrook to Hartford, CT (a 45-mile journey). Over time, the train was used to transport both passengers and freight along its route. The scenic ride nowadays is meant to recreate the journey of a passenger in the 1920's.

The train stops at Deep River Landing where passengers get off and board the riverboat. The Riverboat travels up  the Connecticut River through these Hadlyme, Chester, Haddam, and East Haddam before turning around at the East Haddam Swing Bridge and returning down the river. Along the way, you see many sites: Selden Neck Island, Gillette Castle, eagles, marinas and yacht clubs, and multimillion dollar homes.
